We arrived at 3 pm & JUST missed rice & gravy by 15 minutes. Heartbreaking for me since we live out of state & I need my gravy fix when we come home! After my initial disappointment we got to enjoy a satisfying meal. If you are hungover or just in need of some crispy fried goodness- come here. Red beans & rice are good but the fries could use some cajun seasoning. Get here between 11 & 2:45 to enjoy the daily specials in addition to their chicken.

There are few things in my culinary adventures that make me happier than a good meal of fried chicken. I have to say that Chicken Shack is the second best fried chicken I've ever eaten. I'm glad to see a landmark institution that lives up to the history and hype! I'll freely admit that I'm a fried chicken junkie. I still call my friend from college when I find a great fried chicken/chicken and waffles joint. When we can, we travel to eat fried chicken and compare notes like baseball scouts. I saw the article in 225 about the history of the Chicken Shack and concluded any place in business for 80 years has to be doing something right. Fried chicken in the south is a point of passion so I figured this place has to be great. The fried chicken here is absolutely insane. I don't know what they do to their chicken before its fried, but it has to be heavily brined because its incredibly juicy, almost like a good prime steak. Soft, juicy, and generous portions. The coating is more batter-like than crumby, but has a crunch that can't be beat. Seriously, it was like snapping a piece of celery or biting into a thick potato chip. It just crackles and crunches. You can feel the vibration through your jaw in a visceral crunch which gives a much different experience than hearing it. Its also thick coated so there is plenty to go around. The batter is so crisp because its made fresh. This stuff isn't sitting around to get soggy. Sure, it takes a bit longer to get your food, but its absolutely and completely worth it. The sides are also made by someone who cares what they taste like and not just to have them on the menu. The red beans and rice as well as the greens have pork parts in them like hocks and tails to give them the right amount of texture and flavor. Both were cooked perfectly and not overdone. The potato salad was tasty and satisfying, but definitely not amazing. The same could be said for the fries. Overall, the sides are very good and borderline excellent. The chicken at Chicken Shack is completely legitimate and deserving of the high ranking on this site. Stop in for a fried chicken fix and see what all the fuss is about. I'm sure you'll agree that Chicken Shack is an institution to be enjoyed!

I'm sold! I passed this place en route to a work function. The words Chicken Shack piqued my interest and I came back the same day for lunch. Omg, I was so right. Friendly staff, DELICIOUS FOOD, and to top it off, a steady stream of classic soul music by Gladys Knight and The Pips, The Ojays, and more. What topped it off for me was the lady at the counter had ice water on my tray with the food. I didn't order water! I didn't order anything to drink! But she gave me water because that's how awesome this place is! I gave four stars because I haven't tried more food and I might just have come here on a 'good day'. I'm sure it will change to five on my next visit.

It would be hard to make a better chicken batter than this. I went there with my mom and dad on a Friday for lunch and really enjoyed it. I also had the yams which were very good as well. They tasted like christmas apple cider. :) Next time I'm going to give the strips a try.

My friend and I came to BR for a conference and used Yelp to find this Diamond! EVERYTHING we had was delicious! My friend had the 3 piece dark with shack balls, yams, and dirty rice. I had the tenders with honey mustard, fries, and shack balls. We already said this is a must stop before we head back to Texas!

Finger licking good!! I'm so glad I randomly googled fried chicken on Yelp and found this place. It's not too far from my house which is a bad thing. Can't be eating fried chicken all the time!!! It's not in the best of areas and the interior/exterior is nothing to write home about. Bright yellow tables and super outdated. But, who cares?! I'm surprised they haven't put Church's (right next door), out of business. I've been in the search for some good fried chicken in BR ever since eating at Willie Mae's in Nola. Finally found it! Not to mention, it's super cheap! My family (6 of us) got a 16 piece mixed, large red beans and rice and large potato salad for 34 bucks and couple drinks too! I mean, that's cheap!! At least in my book it is...correct me if I'm wrong! And it came with a ton of biscuits (not my fave...were cold). The potato salad was some of the most delicious I've ever had (perfectly whipped and seasoned). My sister and brother in law are red bean connosierures and approved of the red beans and rice. I thought they were enjoyable as well. For the star of the meal, the chicken. It was perfectly cooked. The skin had just the right amount of crisp and the chicken inside was nice and juicy! Mm mm mmmmm!! There's no waiter service or booze. Just be prepared for a damn good meal.

What is open late night on Saturday and is quick? Chicken shack!! We got in there and it was pretty busy. Ordered 4 mixed pieces with rice dressing and fries as a side. Turns out they gave us 5 pieces of chicken and 3 of them were gone by the time we got home. Needless to say, it was a tasty ride.

Knuckle sucking good is their slogan and that is an under statement. I had the smothered oxtail with rice and gravy, sides of mac n cheese, collard greens, and "knock your teeth out" sweet tea. Everything was very savory and pure soul food. Everytime I come here I have leave with unbuttoned pants and requesting a wheelchair. You can't go wrong with anything you get from here. However if it is your first time here you must go with their fried chicken. You'll thank me later.

Best fried chicken in Baton Rouge hands down. On Tuesday they have a special where you can get 2 people of dark meat for a dollar forty five. They have awesome pork chops and also of what you would call soul food lets plates from 11 to 245 everyday. Great pork chop sandwiches and great desserts. There's also a guy outside who sells sweets such as brownies and candy apples he makes himself. There's always a line but it moves quickly and you get your food relatively fast considering that they cook a lot of the things that are not chicken to order. If you want some good fried chicken definitely go to the Chicken Shack you can't beat the prices at all and the sides are always homemade.

I've been visiting Chicken Shack for many years, but just got introduced to their breakfast. If you haven't tried it, you are missing a treat! They offer a huge variety of items, with the foundation being "The Shack Breakfast" for only $2.99. It is a full meal with grits, eggs, bacon or sausage, toast or biscuit. If you want to venture outside the norm, they also have breakfast platters that include their famous chicken, fried pork chops, fried fish or popcorn shrimp! All combos are a good size and under $5.50. But my favorite is definitely the shack chicken biscuit, which had a generous fried chicken breast on a soft, buttery biscuit (about $3). It is a family owned restaurant and it shines through with pride each time I visit. Mr. Delpit was onsite during my most recent visit and made a point to stop by our table and thank us for stopping by and made sure we were pleased with our service. Absolutely love Chicken Shack! It's a jewel to our City.

Absolutely delicious. The shack balls are amazing, worth getting for both sides. Best fried chicken in town.

Best Chicken and Mustard Greens in town! Well its official I'm addicted to this place I've been here 5 times in the past month! The Chicken is really, really, really juicy, the batter is perfect , the seasoning is delicious and it's just the right amount of crispy. The staff is always really nice and the Chicken is always hot and did I mention that the Chicken was really juicy ? Unfortunately, out of the 5 times I've been I've NEVER tasted the Mac n Cheese because they only have it at lunch and I've only been in the evening. I'm really looking forward to trying some of their lunch specials because if their Chicken is this good then I'm pretty sure their lunch specials will be delicious too. I think my favorite sides are the Mustard Greens followed by the Rice Dressing and then the Shack Balls(Boudin Balls). The Mustard Greens run out pretty quick too because I've only had them 2 out of 5 times but trust me there's a reason they run out quick. They're the best Mustard Greens I've ever had! They have the perfect amount of seasoning and big chunks of pork in it, they're delicious! Next time I go I'm getting 2 sides of that with my chicken. I did get a chance to try their fried Fish and it was delicious too, I would definitly get it again. Everything I have tried from here has been good from the Coleslaw to Potato Pie to the Red Beans & Rice plus all the other stuff I already mentioned. If you haven't been here you need to come because you're missing out, IT IS THE BEST CHICKEN IN TOWN they just don't brag about it.

Wow! I read the reviews and decided to try out the Chicken Shack. I am glad I did it was delicious. This is a take out place. They have seating but it is classic plastic. The lady that took my order was very friendly. The prices are very reasonable. Chicken pieces were large. Worth the short drive from BTR.

The best fried chicken I have eaten in my entire life. (Sorry Meme...my grandmother, Lord rest her soul). It's golden, flaky, greasy, scrumptous piece of heaven. Let me tell you the chicken is not the only thing that makes you wanna slap your momma! They provide a daily soul food lunch menu...ox tails, turkey wings, baked chicken, cornbread dressing, yams, rice & gravy. The fried porkchop is pretty darn good as well. Seafood options: shrimp or fish poboy or platter. No matter what you order, you will not be disappointed. Absolutely NO healthy options! Not even iceburg lettuce. So if it's healty that you want you have come to the wrong place. Being born and raised in Baton Rouge, this place is a staple in the community. The quality and even the staff have not changed over the years.

This is my all time favorite chicken in BR! They are so consistent with their taste and service. I love that I know what I'm going to get each time without the reservation of thinking if it'll be good today. Although the chicken alone is awesome, all of the sides are a must try. Don't leave without peach cobbler or potato pies, delish! Also make sure you check out the daily specials. The smothered turkey wings rice and gravy OMG... Love it!

I found this place in one of the local papers and had to try it so, I made my way there the next day. I order the chicken snack or something like that. I forgot the name. The meal was ok. A little greasy and mine was really bland. For the price, I can deal. I'd still recommend it and I'd probably go again and just order something else.

All I can say is WOW. My dad and I had this chicken and we were debating whether it was fried or broasted. I wish they would franchise to the chicago area. This is a staple food item I must have when I return to Baton Rouge

best fried chicken ever! Went for lunch today with the family and had the 9 piece dark with 3 sides. Yummy! The chicken was just right with the salt and juicy. Cooked to perfection. The beans and rice were excellent. The rice dressing was good, but I'm not a rice dressing fan. The cole slaw was tasty. they were out of greens today. Would have done that over the rice dressing. Will definitely go back.

True to its name, Delpit's resembles a shack. Walking in, you feel at home in the quaint place. Classic r&b and soul cover the space. theres also a familiarity the patrons have with one another. Everyone greets eachother, shaking the hands of the neighborhood elder's. Much to be expected of a neighborhood institution. As I get closer to the window, I try to pay attention to what the regulars order. It's Tuesday, so ordering the 2 piece special is a no brainer. They call my number, and I am handed a brown paper bag. No frills, no fancy container with a logo. It's all about the chicken. I open my bag and before me is 2 pcs of steaming hot drumstciks. They use a wet batter which seals in the juices and provides a thinner, crispier crust. Overall, the chicken was tasty but didn't standout from any other experience. I will definitely patron the establishment again, if craving fried chicken. Although, I won't go out of my way to find a location.

i wanted to try willie mays in n.o.but the line was unbeleivably long. i heard it was a tourist trap anyway.then i was asked"why don't you just go to chicken shack? they're better anyway" i went to this one and got a 16 piece, i thought it was delicious with an onion ring style wet batter. very greasy, but i'm not trying to eat this everyday. As i walked in and noticed i was the only white boy in the whole place, i knew i'd come to the right spot. i made a little small talk with a few of the old timers and they steered me in the right direction on what to get. i wanted to get the fried porkchops but wasn't brave enough so i stuck with the chicken. i can quite honestly say it may be the best fried chicken i've eaten to date!

I ended up trying Chicken Shack for takeout at a social function, and it was amazing! I don't know how they cook it, but it works well. Arguably, it might be even better than Popeye's, but I see the latter in a different genre of restaurants. It is an excellent place for soul food. I cannot rate the restaurant popular, as I have not set foot in it, but the food it awesome!

You gotta go at lunch. The sides are amazing. I get the fried pork chop sandwich. Bone in and the chop coming out the sides of the bun. Add two or three sides if you want the ultimate soul food experience.
